Painting Works Singapore — Prep Work Makes the Difference

Most painting problems — peeling, patchy finish, visible brush marks, colour that looks different from the sample — trace back to skipped surface preparation, not the paint itself. Two coats of premium paint over a poorly prepped wall will still look bad within a year.

We treat prep work as its own stage of the job, not something to rush through before the "real" painting starts.

If a quote doesn't mention sanding, patching and priming separately, ask what's included. "Painting" that skips straight to top coat is how patchy, uneven finishes happen.

Signs Your Paint Job Needs Redoing

  • Peeling or flaking — usually moisture getting underneath the paint film
  • Chalking — a powdery residue that comes off on your hand when you touch the wall, a sign the paint has aged past its lifespan
  • Hairline cracks visible through the paint surface
  • Mould or mildew patches, especially in bathrooms and poorly ventilated rooms
  • Patchy, uneven colour from an old paint job that skipped proper coverage
  • Yellowing, especially on ceilings, from age or nicotine/smoke exposure

How We Paint

  1. Surface inspection & patching — cracks and holes filled, uneven areas skimmed smooth.
  2. Sanding & cleaning — old flaking paint removed, surface cleaned of dust and grease before anything goes on.
  3. Priming — especially important on new plaster or patched sections, which absorb paint differently from the surrounding wall.
  4. Two coats of top coat — applied with proper drying time between coats, not rushed to finish in a day.
  5. Final touch-up — edges checked, protection removed, and any missed spots corrected before handover.
Skipping primer on a patched section is a common shortcut. The repaired patch absorbs paint differently from the original wall, and without primer it shows through as a visible blotch once the top coat goes on — even after two coats.

HDB and Condo Painting Notes

Painting alone typically doesn't require an HDB permit, unless it's part of a larger renovation that does. For condos, most MCSTs have guidelines on approved exterior facade colours if you're painting anything visible from outside the unit — worth checking before committing to an unusual exterior colour.

Questions

Painting Works FAQ

How long does painting take for a 4-room flat?

Roughly 4 to 6 days including surface prep, priming, two coats of top coat and drying time between each stage.

Do I need to move out during painting?

Not necessarily. We protect floors and furniture and work room by room, though good ventilation is needed while the paint smell clears.

How many coats of paint do I need?

Two coats minimum over a primed surface for even coverage. Three coats if you're changing from a dark colour to a light one, since dark pigment tends to show through.

What's the difference between standard and premium paint?

Premium paints offer better washability, mould resistance and colour retention over time. Worth it for high-traffic areas, kitchens, bathrooms and any wall prone to moisture.

Do you paint exterior facades?

Yes, including weatherproof coating systems for surfaces exposed to sun and rain, which need a different paint system than interior walls.

Can you match my existing paint colour?

Yes. We colour-match using the paint code if you have it, or sample-match on site if you don't.

Do you paint over existing wallpaper?

No — wallpaper should be stripped first. Painting directly over it leads to bubbling and peeling once moisture gets trapped underneath.
