Types of Epoxy System
Roller-Applied Epoxy Coating
The thinnest and most economical option. Applied in two or three coats. Suits light traffic, storage areas and spaces where appearance and dust control matter more than heavy impact.
Self-Levelling Epoxy
A thicker system poured and spread to flow into a flat, seamless surface. Covers minor unevenness and gives the smooth high-gloss look most people picture. The usual choice for showrooms and clean production areas.
Anti-Slip Epoxy
Aggregate broadcast into the wet coating creates texture underfoot. Essential for ramps, wet processing areas and commercial kitchens, where a gloss floor would be a hazard.
Heavy-Duty Epoxy Screed
The thickest build, laid as a trowel-applied mortar. Made for constant forklift traffic, heavy impact and areas where equipment is dragged across the floor.
Why Preparation Decides Everything
Almost every epoxy failure traces back to preparation, not the coating. Epoxy applied onto dusty, sealed, oily or damp concrete will lift, and no product formulation fixes that.
- Mechanical preparation — the concrete is shot blasted or diamond ground to open the surface so the epoxy can key into it. Chemical etching alone is not sufficient for industrial work.
- Repair — cracks, spalls and joints filled and levelled.
- Moisture testing — concrete holding moisture will push the coating off. A slab without a vapour barrier may need a moisture-tolerant primer.
- Priming — a penetrating primer seals the surface and creates the bond layer.
- Build coats — applied to the specified thickness with proper recoat windows.
- Line marking and topcoat — bay markings, walkways and directional arrows applied before the final seal so they wear with the floor rather than off it.

Downtime and Curing
Epoxy needs uninterrupted curing time, and this is the part worth planning around properly.

What is epoxy flooring?
Epoxy flooring is a resin coating applied over prepared concrete that cures into a hard, seamless surface. Unlike tiles it has no grout lines, so there are no joints to trap dirt or fail under load, which makes it suited to warehouses, factories, workshops and carparks.
How long does epoxy flooring take to install?
Preparation and application typically take 2 to 4 days depending on area and system. Curing then needs 24 hours for light foot traffic, around 48 hours for full foot traffic, and 5 to 7 days before forklifts or vehicles.
How long does epoxy flooring last?
A correctly prepared and specified epoxy floor lasts 10 to 15 years in commercial use, and 5 to 10 years under heavy industrial traffic. Lifespan depends far more on the surface preparation and system thickness than on the brand of resin.
Can epoxy be applied over existing tiles or old coatings?
Sometimes, but it is rarely the right choice. Epoxy bonds best to mechanically prepared concrete. Old coatings and tiles are usually removed, because a coating is only as sound as whatever sits beneath it.
Why do epoxy floors peel or lift?
Almost always because of inadequate preparation — dusty, sealed, oily or damp concrete. The surface must be shot blasted or diamond ground to open it up, and moisture in the slab must be tested for. No resin formulation compensates for skipped preparation.
Is epoxy flooring slippery?
